Our Story

A sky island is a mountain habitat that rises above the surrounding landscape, creating the conditions for growth, resilience, and transformation.

As a Texas native, founder O'Lita Schafer grew up in a region considered part of a sky island ecosystem. Years later, after building a life in California and raising children who proudly embrace both their Texas roots and California spirit, the concept of a sky island took on an even deeper meaning, and inspired the creation of Sky Island Academy.

Sky Island Academy was founded to help athletes rise beyond their perceived limits, discover their strengths, and build the confidence, discipline, and character needed to succeed both on and off the court.

While our roots are in volleyball, our vision extends far beyond a single sport. Through expert coaching, mentorship, and a supportive community, we help athletes develop not only their athletic abilities, but also the resilience and leadership skills that will serve them throughout life.

More than an academy, Sky Island is a place where athletes learn that their future is not defined by where they started, but by how willing they are to keep climbing.

Together, we train. We grow. We rise.

Meet Coach O'Lita Schafer

Volleyball has been one of the defining passions of my life. As a former NCAA multi-sport athlete at the University of Alaska Anchorage, I learned firsthand the dedication, resilience, and teamwork required to compete at a high level. Coming from a long line of coaches, I developed an early appreciation for the impact great mentorship can have on an athlete's journey.

My coaching philosophy is simple: every athlete deserves to be seen, challenged, and believed in. I strive to create an environment where players build confidence, embrace challenges, and develop both as athletes and as people.

At Sky Island Academy, success isn't measured by perfection; it's measured by growth, effort, and becoming the best version of yourself, both on and off the court.

Meet Coach Leah Clayton

Sky Island Academy is supported by my sister, Leah Clayton, who serves in a consulting role as we continue to grow the academy.

A former NCAA athlete, Leah went on to play in England and Germany before competing most recently in the Australian Volleyball Super League with Perth Steel. She is also an active coach and passionate advocate for athlete development.

Volleyball has always been a family affair for us, and our shared experiences continue to influence the culture we are building at Sky Island. Together, we are committed to creating a positive environment where athletes feel supported, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential.

And yes, I am still working on convincing Leah to make the move from Australia to Los Angeles. 😊
